Taking advantage that I´m leaving in Houston, I decided to travel to San Antonio for a weekend. In the way we stopped in San Marcos Outlet, one of the biggest in the world. But the thing is that finally we arrive to San Antonio. Is a beautiful city where you can walk everywhere in the downtown, there are a lot of people walking around the river walk and a lot of restaurants.
If you are going to visit San Antonio you should try the smoothies that is a drink made with natural fruit and ice and is very tasted.

There are also some beautiful places to visit like the Alamo, where the Mexicans had their fort before San Antonio coming to be from United States. The Tower of the Americans, where you can see all city. You have to pay to up to the tower around $10, but there are a way where you only can up to a restaurant and is free, so you can only drink a beer or a coke and you can see the city from the top of the tower and drink something for the same price or even cheaper.

San Antonio is the second-largest city in the state of Texas and the seventh largest city in the United States. Located in South Texas, the city is a cultural gateway into the American Southwest. San Antonio is the seat of Bexar County with a population just under 1.3 million as of the 2006 U.S. Census estimate, as well as the 4th fastest growing large city in the nation from 2000-2006 in terms of percentage. Its metropolitan area has a population of over 1.9 million and is the 28th-largest metropolitan area in the U.S.

San Antonio was named for the Portuguese Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day it was (June 13) when a Spanish expedition stopped in the area in 1691. The city has a strong military presence—it is home to Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley right outside the city. San Antonio is home to the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region.

Famous for its River Walk, the Alamo, Tejano culture, and home to the SeaWorld San Antonio and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks, the city is visited by 20 million tourists per year. San Antonio is also home to the first museum of modern art in Texas—the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, as well as one of the more successful National Basketball Association teams in league history, the San Antonio Spurs.

Native Americans originally lived near the San Antonio River Valley, in the San Pedro Springs area, calling the vicinity "Yanaguana," meaning "refreshing waters." In 1691, a group of Spanish explorers and missionaries came upon the river and Native American settlement on June 13, the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padova, Italy and named the place and river "San Antonio" in his honor.

In 1716, The Spanish Council of War approved a site on the San Antonio River for construction of a fort. The Domingo Ramón expedition established a presidio on the river. That council also approved a request by Father Olivares to establish a Catholic Mission at the site. In 1718, Martin de Alarcón, then Governor of Texas, named the presidio San Antonio de Béjar in honor of the Duke of Béjar, in Spain, the viceroy's brother. The presidio, the villa it protected, and the mission comprised the municipality named San Antonio de los Llanos by Alarcón.
Between 1720 and 1724 the presidio and the mission were moved to their present sites at the modern Plaza de Armas and Alamo Plaza. In 1726 the official settlement population was 200. In 1731, sixteen families (56 people) from the Canary Islands arrived at the presidio. By royal decree they founded La Villa de San Fernando and established the first civil government in Texas.

Memorial to the Alamo defendersSan Antonio grew to become the largest Spanish settlement in Texas, and for most of its history, the capital of the Spanish, later Mexican, province of Tejas. From San Antonio the Camino Real, today Nacogdoches Road in San Antonio, ran to the American border at the small frontier town of Nacogdoches. When Antonio López de Santa Anna unilaterally rescinded the Mexican constitution of 1824 violence ensued in many provinces of Mexico. In a series of battles the anglo Texans succeeded in forcing Mexican forces out of the anglo settlement area northeast of San Antonio. Under the leadership of Ben Milam, in the Battle of Bexar, December, 1835, Texian forces captured San Antonio from forces commanded by General Martin Perfecto de Cos, Santa Anna's brother in law. In the spring of 1836 Santa Anna marched on San Antonio. A volunteer force under the joint command of William Barrett Travis and James Bowie occupied and fortified the deserted mission. The Battle of the Alamo took place from February 23 to March 6, 1836. The outnumbered Texan force was ultimately defeated with all of Alamo defenders killed. These men were seen as "martyrs" for the cause of Texas freedom and "Remember the Alamo" became a rallying cry in Texas' eventual success at defeating Santa Anna's army.

Juan Seguín, who organized the company of Hispanic Texans that fought and died for Texas independence at the Alamo and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto, served as mayor of San Antonio. He was forced out of that office at gunpoint by Anglo politicians in 1842 becoming the last Hispanic mayor for nearly 150 years.
In 1845 the United States annexed Texas and included it as a state in the Union. This, after some incitement by United States troops along the Mexican border, led to the Mexican-American War. Though the U.S. ultimately won the war was devastating to San Antonio, and at its end the population of the city had been reduced by almost two thirds, to only 800 inhabitants. After the war prosperity to the city, and by 1860, at the start of the Civil War, San Antonio had grown to a city of 15,000 people.

Following the Civil War San Antonio prospered as a center of the cattle culture. During this period San Antonio remained a frontier city but its mixture of cultures gave it a reputation as being both beautiful and exotic. Frederick Law Olmstead, the architect who designed Central Park in New York City, once described San Antonio as having a, "jumble of races, costumes, languages, and buildings," which gave it a quality which only New Orleans could rival in, "odd and antiquated foreignness."

In 1877 the first railroad reached San Antonio and the city was no longer on the frontier but began to enter the mainstream of American society. At the beginning of the 20th century the streets of downtown were widened to accommodate street cars and modern traffic, destroying many historic buildings in the process.

Like many municipalities in the American Southwest, San Antonio experiences steady population growth. The city's population has nearly doubled in 35 years, from just over 650,000 in the 1970 census to an estimated 1.2 million in 2005 through both steady population growth and land annexation.
