Mekenes is a beutiful city of middle size, in the northern of Morocco, about 80 miles or 130 kilometres from Rabat, the capital of Morocco and about 40 miles or 60 kilometres from Fes, other big city in Morocco. Like in every places in Morocco the 
people are very friendly. In the city center there are a lot of local small shops. I was there with a big group of people. It is served by the A2 expressway between those two cities and by the corresponding railway. You also can transportate by train although I don´t recommend you if you are not local. Meknes was the capital of Morocco under the reign of Moulay Ismail (1672 – 1727) who undertook such palatial building operations that the city was called the Versailles of Morocco. Little of his construction has survived. A European town is laid out beside the old one. It is the capital of the Meknes-Tafilalet region. Meknes is named after a Berber tribe which was known as Miknasa in the medieval Arabic sources.
It has a noted carpet-weaving industry. There are also woolen mills, cement and metal works, oil distilleries, and food-processing plants. The land upon which the city is founded and much of its surrounding territory came under the domination of the Roman Empire in 117 AD. The original community from which Meknes can be traced was an 8th century Kasbah, or fortress. A Berber tribe called the Miknasa settled there in the 10th century, and a town consequently grew around the fortress. Meknes saw its golden age as the imperial capital of Moulay Ismail following his accession to the Sultanate of Morocco.
