KRANJ, SLOVENIA

Kranj is the third largest municipality and fourth largest city in Slovenia with a population of 53,000 (2007), located approximately 20km north-west of Ljubljana. The centre of the Upper Carniola region (northwestern Slovenia) is mainly an industrial city with strong electronics industry.














Sport is also developed, its pool is the biggest aquatic centre in the country and it hosted 2003 Men's European Water Polo Championship(along with Ljubljana hosting women's). Every year's Teden mladih(Youth Week) festival is very popular. It has a preserved medieval old town at the confluence of the Kokra and the Sava rivers.














The historical region of Carniola (Kranjska in Slovenian) is named after the town, which was its provincial capital in the early Middle ages.

St. Kancijan's ChurchSt. Kancijan's Church is the largest church in Kranj and also the head of Kranj župnija and dekanija. It originates from 14th century. It is 442m³ big. The church was build by old counts. Khislstein CastleCastle was build in middle 16th century by baron Janž Khisl. Later owners include Moscon, Ravbar, Apfaltrer, Ausperg and Pagliaruzzi families. Building was renovated in 1952 by famous architect Jože Plečnik. Building's garden is often used for some concerts.
